Ten Years of the Loewe Puzzle Bag
Ten years, twenty styles, one shape that still holds.
LOEWE marks a decade of its most recognisable design, not by reinventing it, but by reminding us why it worked in the first place.
There’s something quietly clever about the LOEWE Puzzle Bag. First off, you still see this bag on the arms of women (and men) walking around town, holding their precious belongings. Secondly, ten years after its debut, its design holds up, origami-like, functional, slightly offbeat. It’s one of the reasons Jonathan Anderson revived the fortunes of a little known, Spanish leather goods brand (granted, it was owned by LVMH) but his magic touch with handbags has had a long lasting consequence on what we want in our bags.
To mark its tenth anniversary, LOEWE is revisiting the iconic shape with Puzzle 10: a capsule of 19 re-editions, plus one new design: The Confetti bag. Hand stitched with hundreds of tiny leather sequins in pastel and metallic tones. Together, the collection doesn’t just nod to a decade of the Puzzle, they map out ten years of the brand's aesthetic interests: pop surrealism, archival prints, soft geometry and colour play.
Some editions are more immediately wearable: the tartan or William Morris styles, for example; while others lean into fantasy, like the anime-inspired bag from Spring/Summer 2016 or the glitchy pixel print carried by A$AP Rocky. The point isn’t uniformity. It’s that the Puzzle bag, with its cuboid logic and off-centre proportions, holds all of these ideas without losing its shape.
The collection will be available exclusively at Harrods from 29th May to 22nd June, housed in a tiled, velvet-lined pop-up shop that mirrors LOEWE’s CASA stores. There’ll be live craft demonstrations, exterior window displays referencing artists like Ken Price and William Morris; and, in classic LOEWE style, a branded coffee van outside, serving Puzzle chocolate to accompany your iced latte.
If LOEWE’s spent the last decade proving anything, it’s that a design doesn’t have to shout. It just needs to hold its (very interesting) shape.
