Have Your Cake and Wear It

Laila Gohar has good taste, and now you can wear it too! The Egyptian-American culinary artist has collaborated with Nordic lifestyle brand Arket to develop a stylish, fruit-forward ready-to-wear collection that combines whimsy with sleekness, and play with practicality.

Laila has a long history of grounding the natural world into tangible, structural installations or practical design objects, and has worked before with many fashion houses, though this is her first venture into designing clothing herself. The collection meets Gohar and Arket halfway: sheer blouses festooned with floral and foody motifs, practical-but-playful aprons and workwear-inspired canvas sets.

The pieces are tactile, rooted in tradition and craft, equally appropriate for working in the kitchen and going out for lunch: “I don’t really differentiate between everyday clothing and special occasion clothing,” says Gohar. “I cook in my nicest clothes, I host in them, I live in them.” For the launch Laila reimagined humble fruit and veg as thrones on a gallant carousel: a testament to Laila’s celebration of the everyday.
