It’s not unusual for a perfumer to discuss the link between memory and fragrance… But it’s rare that a scent perfectly captures snapshots of an adventurous life filled with cherished memories. Which is why we love the lifestyle brand Lola James Harper. The French perfumer Remi Mekdachi, who has previously worked at Roger Vivier, Chloé and Lacoste, has conceptualised a range of 18 quirky candles, each inspired by a memory of a certain location at a specific moment. So the Bombonera in Barcelona candle – a mix of amber and incense notes – evokes a memory of an afternoon spent in Spanish sweet shops, while Rainy Days in Lake District transmits this souvenir with myrrh, labdanum and ylang.

We love the beautiful deep burnt-red glasses of the candles, that would make any mantlepiece look immediately warmer and chicer. Our favourite in the range are The Music Studio of Trufo Street, a feminine, musky rose and The Fun Fair of Les Tuileries, that smells like a Parisian fig-tree in summer mixed the sweetness of cotton candy.

Lola James Harper Candles, £34 each, are available from Selfridges.
