Few perfumer’s CVs are quite so sparkling, so bursting with prowess than that of Francis Kurkdjian, the man behind Jean-Paul Gaultier’s Le Male, as well as fragrances at Burberry, Nina Ricci, Carven, Guerlain and YSL, as well as his own eponymous perfume house Maison Francis Kurkdjian. At his own brand, outside of the briefs of the big fashion and fragrance houses, Kurkdjian is free to develop interesting, diverse and creative perfumes with unusual and intensely high-quality ingredients. Where most brands might launch just one oud, Kurkdjian created a whole oud collection based on the moods of different fabrics; he’s developed a scented laundry detergent line; and a bubble mix that blows scented bubbles of rose, mint, pear or violets.

The latest Maison Francis Kurkdjian launch, Aqua Celestia, joins Aqua Universalis and Aqua Vitae in the Aqua collection. It’s a range that interprets the freshness of water and the new Aqua Celestia eau de toilette iteration is bringing a sparkling, luminous facet to the set. With a citrus punch of Mexican lime, notes of a heady yet cooling English mint, aromatic Provencal mimosa blossom and warming fruity Burgundy blackberries with a musk accord, the fragrance feels bright and summery. It’s feminine without being overpowering like a glittering splash of water cooling one’s skin in the morning, Aqua Celestia is revitalising and refreshing. Also available in a scented body cream and shower gel, this scent has got us thinking of blue skies, calming waters, warm horizons. In essence: the “seamless bond between the blue of the sky and the blue of the sea”.
