In light of the advice we've garnered from the experts, we now know the importance of supplements and their role in our beauty regimes. But this sparked another round of questions, leading me further down the rabbit hole of self-care and beautification…

What comes to mind when you hear someone say ‘detox’? Perhaps green tea, fasting or activated charcoal? Well, today in mainstream media the word is being thrown about all over the place to promote weight loss and other ‘health benefits’ – even high street coffee stores have taken to selling charcoal shots and juices! But how can we actually detoxify and what are the benefits, if there are any?

Having scouted out three (of many) detoxifying methods, we’re here to share the scoop on how to rid your body of toxic and unhealthy substances, and give yourself that little bit of TLC…

Charcoal
If last night was one of those nights where you indulged, ate your entire body weight in fast food and maybe had one too many glasses of vino, don’t fret, because activated charcoal is a great (and natural!) way to detox and flush out any nasties – traditional healers have used it for thousands of years.

The skin on our bodies is just as important as that on our faces, so, to cleanse from top to toe, whack on the taps and run yourself a bath with Goop’s G.Tox Detox Salt Bath Soak – the ultimate SOS if you’re in need of a full-body detox. The mineral-rich salt-based formula, enhanced with activated charcoal will work to soften the skin and draw out impurities to leave you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. But, if baths aren’t you thing, and you’re more of the shower type, scrub up and opt for Living Proof’s Perfect Hair Day Triple Detox Shampoo. Taking cleansing to the next level, the charcoal powder infused shampoo works to absorb excess oil. The result? Hair that looks and feels cleaner than ever.

Masks
In need of a pamper sesh? Look no further than to clay masks because their highly active, concentrated and efficient properties work magic to detoxify congested complexions and draw out blemish-causing impurities without stripping moisture levels. Herbivore’s Blue Clay Detox Mask, surprisingly, is formulated with only three ingredients and can be used as a full-face or spot-targeting treatment. Unlike anything else, this powder to paste is perfect for when in need of a good cleanse. The Purifying Detox Pink Clay Mask by Emma Hardie also works wonders in the skincare department with its radiance-enhancing formula – moringa oil works to neutralise free radical damage and Australian pink clay delivers a deep hydration. Working with a dual-action professional cleansing cloth, this duo will nourish, brighten and unify skin tone. What more could you want

Prebiotics and Probiotics
If you’re not so well versed in the pre/probiotics department, let us enlighten you. Prebiotics are found in food and supplements and induce the growth of beneficial microorganisms – to put it quite simply, they have a number of health benefits and reduce the risk of disease, perfect for a detox! Taking probiotics can detoxify your system by increasing the number of good bacteria in your body – they help you absorb nutrients more efficiently and balance your gut.

The Nue Co. Probiotic Protein powder works to replenish your energy levels and fortify the immune system. Enriched with plenty of pre and probiotics your digestive system will never have felt so good. The Beauty Chef also have a range of pre/probiotic powders to help your body realign either during or after times of excess. Our favourite is the Cleanse Inner Beauty Powder which is a comprehensive super-greens supplement designed to help detox and purify your body on the inside, promoting smoother, clearer skin on the outside. If you’re feeling a bit sluggish, mix 1 tablespoon of either powder into your smoothie, milk or water and enjoy to reap the benefits!
