We don't need to hark on about why we should all be thinking more sustainably – there's enough news about the climate crisis to clearly tell us that – but even for the best of us, we still need a nudge in the environmentally friendly direction to make the changes that'll better our planet.

In this day and age, a reusable coffee cup is no longer your get-out-of-jail-free-card for acting sustainably in other areas of your life. Now more than ever, we need to be putting our green thinking caps on and addressing how we can buy more sustainably with the clothes we wear, the beauty we put on our skin and the ornaments we place in our homes. So, this September, we're doing exactly that.

Our new 'Sustainable September' series will be highlighting the best sustainably-minded products and brands that range over fashion, beauty and homeware, everyday throughout the month, showing that there are earth-affable options that you can opt for. Today, we're looking at the beauty brand Skin Sapiens, that's launched exclusively with Selfridges, for the department store's new Project Earth initiative.

Sustainability is a relatively new buzzword within the beauty-sphere, but unlike with fashion, the industry hasn’t fallen trap to using it without proper meaning. Beauty has often been seen with environmentally negative undertones; the use of harmful chemicals, plastic packaging and a variety of damaging contributions to the environment being the main causes of dismay. But, with a growing demand for natural, plant based products, there are those who continue to spearhead the way for environmentally conscious products within the community.

Much like Skin Sapiens; a certified natural, vegan and cruelty free brand, born in James Jardella’s kitchen in 2017. After the birth of his son, James no longer wanted to put the “unknown” on his newborn’s sensitive skin. Consequently, Skin Sapiens has been creating products consisting of natural ingredients that are not only good for the skin, but also good for the planet. All products are gentle, simple and light, so that formulas can be used on the whole family – their products range from face cleansers to baby bath gel – and of course all are unperfumed, dermatologically tested and paediatrician approved.

Their environmental promise doesn’t fault either. Skin Sapiens has been transparent that their products are green without the greenwashing (something that can be prevalent in the sustainability discussion), and the company is a paid up member of 1% for the Planet – a global movement inspiring business and individuals to support environmental solutions. This eco driven brand will donate 1% of every sale to charities fighting climate change.

Now part of Selfridges latest ‘Project Earth’ initiative – which is a commitment to change the way we shop, by collaborating with 300 brand partners, 80 of which are beauty – the indie label is now available on a mainstream global market. To mark the launch, Skin Sapiens will be including their popular 100% natural and vegan lip balm in a limited edition Selfridges Project Earth Beauty Bag, alongside other sustainable brands. Sustainable stalwarts, it’s time to pucker up.
