Ayurveda is a path of empowerment that teaches you how to be your healer – it is a medical and metaphysical science that is the ultimate guide for humanity on how to restore balance between the mind, emotions, body and spirit.

In a nutshell, it's a complete way of life that guides you on how to achieve optimal well-being through nutrition, herbs, lifestyle, self-care, nature, yoga and more. Ayurveda holds ancient holistic healing wisdom that has stood the test of time for over 5,000 years, and it is the much needed antidote for modern living and the times we are in. With chronic mental and physical health disorders on the rise, break downs and burnouts becoming common language across the city landscape, slowly as a collective there is an awakening (mind, with curiosity and skepticism of course). We are beginning to question: there must be something missing from all of this?

With every possible desire and need catered to at the click of a finger – we have unlimited access to the latest health trends and wellness fads – the question is why are we unhealthier and unhappier than ever? Why is there more lack of satisfaction (in all areas of life from what's on our plates to what's going on in the bedroom), if that latest quick-fix is meant to be the all-life-saving miracle formula for health, well-being and happiness?

The missing piece of the puzzle is not as complicated as you may think. It is a gentle and graceful way of being that can benefit your health in the most simple yet profound ways: it is called balance. And whether your over-achieving and go-getter mindset likes it or not, it is here to stay and it's the protocol your mind-body-soul needs to restore and heal. In the West, we do not understand the concept of 'balance'; the lack of it is making us depleted. We are so fixed in the conditioned masculine and linear way of thinking that we go from one thing to the next without a moment to breathe. We strive excessively overboard on one health fad to then next – dropping it in an instant – never minding a moment in-between for self soothing, introspection and stillness. Ayurveda gives you permission to surrender to all of that when it comes to health and healing. It invites you to adopt a more compassionate feminine approach, to step into ease and grace, to take the pressure off your body.

The natural health system guides you from morning until night with grounded wisdom, and reminds you that nothing about health is linear, because we are not fixed and static beings. Ayurveda understands through nature and the energetic bio-physical forces known as the Doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) – which are composed of natures five basic elements of ether, air, fire, water and earth – that we are in-fact energetic beings. Our physiology is constantly adapting and responding to the energetics in our environments, thoughts and emotions, food and lifestyle choices.

Imagine Ayurveda as receiving wisdom from a wise elder, who advises you from a space of love and not of fear. Someone who encourages you to rest when you think you should be doing more, to nourish your body with wholesome foods when you think you should be restricting to reach another fad goal, to say no to the things that you know do not serve you so you can create space for all that lights up your spirit.

I know the power of this science to be so true to the deepest part of my soul because it guided me to transform my own life, and to back my power of my own health and well-being. My health journey that led me up to the discovery of Ayurveda pushed me to my ultimate limits, but through to my life purpose, strength and empowerment that I didn’t even know existed; for which I'll be eternally grateful for.

I first began suffering with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic fatigue, dissociation, insomnia and panic disorder at 12 years old; a time when mental health was still completely taboo. The mental health issues I suffered with would later manifest as physical illnesses. By the time I was 20, when I first discovered Ayurveda, I was at my lowest point and dealing with over 40 symptoms. After collapsing one day, I spent months bedridden with adrenal fatigue, hypoglycemia and anemia, on top of the all the mental health issues, cystic burning acne and chronic digestive disorders I lived with daily. It’s safe to say my mind and body were an extremely confusing place to be. Due to pushing my mind-body in the city without a moment to rest, with the mindset that if I wasn’t ‘achieving’ I was wasting time, and making poor lifestyle choices, my body could not cope a minute longer. It had to get me to listen and begin the path of healing.

I remember when I first came across the rather intriguing word 'Ayurveda': my spirit instantly lit up in a way that I had never experienced before, and I had a deep sense of knowing that everything was about to change. I felt in the dark and lost about my health until I discovered Ayurveda. For the first time ever, it felt like someone came and switched the lights on. Every question I had, Ayurveda answered it. Every mental and physical imbalance I was dealing with made sense for the first time, and I finally had tried-and-tested knowledge on how to begin healing as a whole, not just as a symptom.

After applying the simple and daily changes of Ayurvedic balance and healing, for the first time in my life I felt inside my body. I felt balanced; I felt nourished; I felt whole. In disbelief at this feeling – that felt too good to be true from the reality I had always known – many times I would question is this what it feels like to be whole? To have a mind and body that is one? It was like a miracle, and the best part of this miracle is that it was from the power of my own hands.

While healers hold the space for you to heal, and they teach you the tools, it is you that does the internal work, the daily practices and who finds the strength to keep on going. Through this all, Ayurveda taught me the most sacred gift, of how to restore the delicate harmony between my mind, body, emotions and spirit – and from this gift it taught me unconditional self-love.
