Moodboard Uncovered: Balenciaga SS17
Whenever it’s time for fashion month, you always get to hear that age-old question: “But who would wear that?” Demna Gvasalia’s Spring Summer 2017 vision for Balenciaga included lots of statement looks accentuated with his signature padded shoulders and blocky silhouettes rounded off with a new sense of fetishistic whimsy. However, we noticed quite a number of pop-culture references, and here are five TV and film characters who really would rock Balenciaga SS17.
Krystle Carrington from Dynasty
A reinterpretation of the 1980s power dressing silhouette has been a motif Gvasalia has been cultivating since starting his own brand, but for Balenciaga SS17 the looks were more appropriate for a gala dinner than the streets of London. Dramatic draping and a loose sash scream for that legendary Krystle Carrington blow-dry, with the brooch being a great reason for one of those seminal Krystle vs. Alexis cat fights.
Rocky Balboa from Rocky
The trans-generational symbol of dedication and Hollywood’s favourite boxer in the form of Rocky Balboa would most definitely fall for the new oversized Balenciaga leather bag. Made in a range of colours, this piece will surely be a hit buy of the season, and although he would probably choose a classic brown one – Rocky would use it both as a gym bag and a punching bag.
Marcia Brady from The Brady Bunch
Naïve on the outside and naughty on the inside could easily be a description for both the Balenciaga girl and Marcia Brady. Brash 1960s-style floral prints were a key player for the new season, especially in acid green with red and orange accents – perfect for a school dance and flirting with the boys.
Little Red Riding Hood from The Little Red Riding Hood
Seeing a tightly tied hood will always remind us of The Little Red Riding Hood! For daily outings with her grandma, she would choose the red hooded parka, but when it comes to those wild nights in the woods – the latex versions in black and nude would definitely work best.
Michael J. Dundee from Crocodile Dundee
When you’re fighting crocodiles in the Australian Outback, you can’t really do without a utility vest. This new Balenciaga one is a boxy, oversized version of the 4-pocket tan vest that was part of the original Crocodile Dundee uniform. Paired with some rough chino trousers and a bare chest – Michael J. would be ready to defend his darling Sue.
