This week we visited the fashion world’s sanctuary, Maison Margiela. The London boutique sits discreetly at the end of Mayfair’s Bruton Street, where, almost in defiance of the flashy window displays of its neighbours, it displays just a few mannequins. Even though the founding father stepped out of the picture years ago, his spirit — and his signature white lab coats — is still in evidence. However, in this Autumn Winter 2016 collection, John Galliano’s eclectic touch came through in a fusion of textures and prints, delivering a bold yet wearable mix of military-wear and just about anything else. What were we saluting? A cape dress that had us feeling like a sultry Amelia Earhart, a cartoon-printed dress that had us craving a Saturday morning in front of the telly with sugary cereal, a pair of pointed toe shoes suitable for the Wicked West of the Upper East Side, a trench coat whose sleeves alone have got you covered this Autumn and a printed bag with a pop art print that we can’t stop pondering.

Let's see how they play out (scroll through the images above).

Shearling Cape Dress, £4,185

We think this look is perfect just as it’s shown on the runway: with high-as-you-dare boots and a classic red lip. What could be better for crisp Autumn days?

Collaged Polo Shirt and Printed Dress, £1,925

The merging of a viscose knit polo shirt and a crèpe de chine dress strewn with cartoon mice makes for quite a garment, but Galliano’s creations have never been about blending in with the crowd.

Pointed Toe Shoes, £1,035

With a buckle like that, who needs accessories? Make these shoes your statement piece by simply pairing them with cropped trousers and a jumper.

Trench Coat, Price upon request

Who doesn’t love a good trench coat? Better yet who doesn’t love a great trench coat with enormous knitted sleeves, abstract brooches on the collar and the perfect waistline? No one, that’s who.

5AC Printed Bag, £2,310

The 5AC bag, Galliano’s first for Margiela, comes in a variety of designs but in our books, this one takes the cake. What do the images mean? Is there some sort of symbolism? Think about it as you enjoy the endless street style snaps.

All products are available at Maison Margiela London, located at 22 Bruton Street, W1J 6QE.
