Ditch the Irons

We’ve been told time and time again that straighteners are our biggest hair vice but the sleek ponytails on the catwalks have suggested otherwise. This year, take the heat off your hair, gain 20 more minutes in bed and go au naturel. For 2017 Roksanda’s models had tendrils of their curly bobs falling in their eyes, Jonathan Simkhai’s left their baby hairs fluffy and unkempt, Carolina Herrera’s simply tucked shoulder length waves behind their ears and Public School’s amped the nonchalance up with a swept-to-the-side style – straggly and static but also smouldering.

Carry Less Stuff

Leave the house with little more than your phone. In this day and age, what do you actually need apart from that? Feel free as a bird, lighten your load and carry this year’s favourite: the mini bag. These dinky handbags will be big for 2017. Chloe have micro-sized their Faye bag, Versace’s have miniature locks, Coach’s are on cutesy frames and Fendi’s are the tiniest of them all (complete with mini pom-poms).

Wear Sandals All Year Round

Seasonless style is in, and so are sandals – and socks! Winter warmth doesn’t necessarily come from closed-toe shoes. Dion Lee have lined their double strap shoes with shearling and matched the same shade of purple to thick tights; Iceberg styled their chunky heels with lurex socks while Gucci stuck to knee highs. For dressier occasions, Fendi showed us that lace tights work perfectly with strappy stilettos.

Work on That Waist

You might be aiming for this one anyway after all that hearty holiday eating. Prada pulled out the corset belt way back in February 2016, but the cinched style will be continuing well into 2017 along with some challenging proportions – like Celine’s padded shoulders juxtaposed with super accentuated waists or Roksanda’s belted flared skirts. This year wear ‘the waist’ even above your clothes: Max Mara’s models wore thick bands of leather over suit jackets and 3.1 Phillip Lim’s eyelet corset belt was used to nip in a more masculine suit.

Be More Animal-friendly

Pets are meant to be a calming influence so invest in some animal adorned outfits for 2017. Victoria, Victoria Beckham saw swans decorate shift dresses and Alessandro Michele brought his cat motifs to life with a curled-up tabby in Gucci’s newest lookbook. This trend even works with evening wear: Valentino’s collections were embellished with birds while Dior’s had the more unusual emblems of sequin lobsters and bats.
