When spring calls, flowers seem to listen. Just as the snowdrops and narcissus are popping up all over our back gardens, florals seem to come out of the closet. Instead of taking the idea of spring literally, we decided to pick and choose our favourite flower-named pop-culture characters and bring their look to life, courtesy of some of the best spring/summer 2017 collections. It’s time for a fashion spring break!
Daisy Buchanan wears Marco de Vincenzo
Fringe, lace, glitter and all other embellishments you can imagine on longline silhouettes, reminiscing on the Great Gatsby’s Art Deco style. Mix some 1920s nostalgia with loads of textured fashion and you get Marco de Vincenzo’s spring/summer 2017 collection. While the 1974 adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic went for a more subdued style, the Baz Luhrmann version had Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan swinging around covered in glitter. We think diamonds are the new daisies – and Vincenzo agrees.
Poison Ivy wears Kenzo
Our favourite Poison Ivy wears hot red and is a fatal flirt, with her only superpower being a cut-throat attitude. 1992 Drew Barrymore flick Poison Ivy (she plays the title role) celebrates that unapologetic sexiness of the late 1980s and early 1990s which brings to mind Humberto Leon and Carol Lim’s moodboard for the spring/summer 2017 Kenzo show. The only poison this Ivy needs is a sexy vinyl coat, probably with nothing underneath.
Lily Munster wears Dilara Findikoglu
The daughter of Dracula and a star of the 1960s vampire sitcom is known for her Victorian corsets and redefining what contemporary ideas of neo-gothic style are. Add a bit of embroidered logomania and some unapologetic attitude and you’ve got yourself the design signature of Dilara Findikoglu. The LVMH prize-nominated designer celebrates her mystic feminism through corsets, embroidery and explicit sexiness – just in time to bring Lily back to life. Yet again.
Rose DeWitt Bukater wears Erdem
Few films are as iconic as Titanic. And even though the most memorable scene is the one where Rose only wears her Hope Diamond, the one we’re trying to pull off this spring is the striped boarding-the-ship look. As with any nautical travelling outfit, you get the stripes, the hat, and some smooth Edwardian elegance, just like it was ripped from the pages of Erdem Moralıoğlu’s sketchbook – high collars, ribbons and just the right amount of glitz. This spring, Rose wears stripes, and not roses.
Jasmine wears Fenty x Puma
Who’s the original sassy Disney princess? Jasmine, of course. The Princess of Agrabah’s crop top and harem trousers make her look as if she walked off the Fenty x Puma catwalk. The contemporary Jasmine also known as Rihanna, gives oriental fashion a bodycon makeover in her designs for the sportswear brand with layers of bralets, corsets and tracksuit jerseys intertwined in what becomes a desert look for the Jasmine inside you.
Violet Beauregarde wears No.21
Besides Vetements, no one has made a plush tracksuit quite as cool as Violet Beauregarde. The bossy munchkin from the 2005 remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, rocks her Anna Wintour bob with a unicoloured tracksuit. But now that she’s 12 years older, Violet pairs her troubled attitude with a more elegant take on sportswear. As Alessandro dell’Acqua showed in his spring/summer 2017 collection for No. 21, a zip-up jumper goes over a patchwork skirt, with a single earring and some messily slicked hair. Violet’s look finally reflects her feelings towards Willy Wonka. They’re dark.
