New season, new heights. Or rather, lack of, courtesy of dance-inspired ballet flats that seem to be coming back in a big way. Why? Probably because this Fall 2019 season was full of dance references, where movement and grace is celebrated.

Now, remember that moment a few years back of Repetto and Pretty Ballerinas domination; where the authentic, round-toed ballerina flat with the short bow had us all skipping about? The newest iteration of ballet flat comes with a more fashionable twist, while it will get you pirouetting just the same.

Gabriela Hearst
Since she started the brand a few years ago, Gabriela Hearst has made a name for herself for her luxurious fabrics and a quality-lead approach to classic wardrobe pieces; they're pieces women will keep in their closets forever. She is the anti-fast-fashion poster girl.

These new Fall 2019 ballet flats take the shape of the pointe-toe slipper; with its boxy, squared-off toe complete with leather folds, they echo the shoes Margot Fonteyn or Darcey Bussell would wear. Londoners, you'll soon be able to explore her collections fully with the brand's incoming store on Mount Street in Mayfair.

Dorateymur
If ballet met disco on the dancefloor, this Dorateymur flat shoe would be its offspring. Long and silver lean, with minimal fuss and a capped gold toe, this version of a ballerina comes from the creative mind of Dorateymur – he who loves to exaggerate a key detail (see: his classic oversized lip loafer that I lived in for a long while). His recent foray into ready-to-wear serves the fashionista, but this is a lovely take on the ballet flat for someone who wants a little bit more bling.

Essen The Label
Marre Essen has spent the last couple of years quietly building up a loyal customer base of women who love her clean, beautifully-shaped shoes. Her approach – considered and agonized given she's a one-woman show – is to dream up the shoes she thinks are missing from her personal footwear wardrobe. The perfect brogue. The right heel. The sandal. And now the ballet flat. Clean, minimal soft leather shaped into a glove-like slipper of a shoe, with a thin sole, this is a minimalists dream.
