Style kudos, the Katie Ann McGuigan way, lies in the clashing of geometric prints, and the juxtaposition of shapes and materials.

Fascinated with pattern and volume, the Westminster BA Fashion Design graduate has made it her signature to turn off-kilter combinations into on-point looksChunky wools, sporty nylons and thermochromic textiles (all sourced in England) look right at home together, while somewhat unexpected pairings – like structured leather dresses, tulle tutus, neon brocades, gingham and soft puffer gilets – make for the best bedfellows.

As she builds her name on the London Fashion Week Circuit (AW19 saw her display at the DiscoveryLAB, 180 Strand), the designer is doing so from an ethical and mindful place – sourcing from London seamstresses, pattern drafters, shoemakers and factories to keep production local.

Keen to learn what informs her creative process, we followed Katie around for the day...

“Every morning starts off with bringing my dog, Blue, for a walk in the park. It’s a great way to start off the day and clear my head for a busy day ahead. After our walk in the park, Blue comes to my Studio and then the full day begins.”

“What inspired me this season to design my collection was the Japanese Biker Gang, BOSOZOKU. What sparks my collection is photography and the mood within the images I have researched.”

“I find the creative process most pleasurable when you put in all the work of designing, pattern drafting, toiling, and then when you finally get your hands on the finished garment and its hanging on your rack waiting for show day."

What I love about my studio is that it’s my space to get creative and in the zone everyday. It is where my collection comes together – and it’s so amazing to have a studio with my name on the door.”

“The current playlist for the studio is a playlist on Spotify called Girl Group Heaven – it’s feel good music to help keep us going throughout the day.”

“I always wanted to be a fashion designer. I do what I do, because I grew up around fabric with my parents’ business – luckily I can say I own my own fashion brand today! It is hard work, but I do what I do because I love seeing my collections come together with my name on the label.”
