Before his death in February of last year Karl Lagerfeld had partnered with The Woolmark Company to present the very first ‘do-it-yourself’ haute couture collection. This February it launched, setting the trail for a digital scavenger hunt in which would-be knitters search for a code to get the chance to win one of 777 boxes (seven was Lagerfeld’s lucky number).

The project is a full circle moment for The Woolmark Company and Lagerfeld, whose relationship extends back as far as 1954. The designer rose to prominence after winning the Woolmark Prize (which at the time included Christian Dior and Hubert de Givenchy as judges) for a daffodil yellow coat he had designed.

Caroline Lebar, Head of Image and Communications at Karl Lagerfeld has said that at the time that Lagerfeld won the prize he had intended to become an illustrator, not a designer.   “So this project is a big mix of a lot of things. It’s the fun of the contest, the beauty of the box, the do-it-yourself aspect, but it is also the story of Karl and the hope for the others.”

The boxes contain Woolmark-certified Australian Merino wool yarn, knitting needles, personalised pins and templates to allow the winner to knit a garment from the iconic designer’s vision: a jumper, a hat a headband or a scarf.

As well as launching this competition, The Woolmark Company has also introduced the first Karl Lagerfeld Award at the 2020 International Woolmark Prize in celebration of the life and legacy of the designer.

Codes will be shared until the 7th March. Those codes can then be entered at www.knitkarl.com for a chance to win one of the 777 limited-edition Karl Lagerfeld x The Woolmark Company Knit Kits. KLW7AQR3
