Because there’s no place quite like the Great British high street – from its niche independents, to seasonal Pop-Ups and those expansive yet elegant department stores – Because Magazine is on a mission to champion the bricks-and-mortar of London in all its glory. Each week, we’ll beeline to the rails of our favourite retailers to scope out the must-have pieces and in-store exclusives that are more than worth making an effort for. This week, we're at the Mackintosh pop up in Covent Garden to find out why this isn’t just a retail destination for outerwear.

A Mackintosh coat has always been the go-to sartorial choice for rainy days – which in the UK is a more than common occurrence. With 200 years of expertise under their belts (or more appropriately, their jackets) the brand’s rubberised cotton has been a favourite of many come rain or shine.

But it isn’t just outerwear that they excel in. If you take a roam around their latest pop-up in Covent Garden you’ll find an offering of RTW clothing, accessories and lifestyle bits and bobs that compliment their existing collections.

To give us the lowdown on what’s in store, as well as some of their latest collaborations, we asked their retail buying and merchandising manager, Federica Carissimi to give us a tour.

What… A RB Torrent jacket

Why… “This is a new style that we’re launching in our Spring/Summer 2021 collection. We decided to go with this pattern in our own tartan fabric, but we designed it with Rowing Blazers, which is a new brand that we’re collaborating with who have chosen this patch on the back. This is an exclusive for the pop-up store.”

What… A LO Studio candle

Why… “This is a new product that we’re offering in the Covent Garden pop-up, and also in our store on Conduit Street. The candles are made in the UK by Lo Studio in the countryside and every single scent is based on something that reminds Tracy Longworth, the founder of LO Studio, of her childhood, so there’s a meaning behind each candle. They’re super chic, very elegant and smell amazing.”

What… The New York coat

Why… “This is also from our new Spring/Summer collection, it’s the hero piece from the collection and you can see why; it’s so beautiful! It’s design is based on a safari coat, but has been amplified so everything, like the pockets and the collar, have been enlarged. It's made with the brand’s signature bonded cotton, giving the coat it’s rubberised texture, and is hand-made in Scotland.”

Visit the Mackintosh pop up, from December to April at James Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 8PA.
