We don't need to hark on about why we should all be thinking more sustainably – there's enough news about the climate crisis to clearly tell us that – but even for the best of us, we still need a nudge in the environmentally friendly direction to make the changes that'll better our planet.

In this day and age, a reusable coffee cup is no longer your get-out-of-jail-free-card for acting sustainably in other areas of your life. Now more than ever, we need to be putting our green thinking caps on and addressing how we can buy more sustainably with the clothes we wear, the beauty we put on our skin and the ornaments we place in our homes. So, this September, we're doing exactly that.

Our new 'Sustainable September' series will be highlighting the best sustainably-minded products and brands that range over fashion, beauty and homeware, everyday throughout the month, showing that there are earth-affable options that you can opt for. Today, we're looking at eco-friendly brand, Alexandra Hakim, and her extraordinary jewellery line that transforms discarded objects into wearable pieces.

Making old new again, is British Lebanese jewellery designer, Alexandra Hakim’s ethos when it comes to creating pieces for her collections. If you aren’t versed in her jewellery, it can be a bit of a shock upon finding out that her pieces were once rubbish, waste and discarded materials, which have been skilfully transformed into stylish and wearable pieces. All of the quotidian objects that Alexandra works with tell a different story, and her inspiration can be drawn from the most unlikely objects, like a tomato stem from Beirut's bustling markets, to debris found after a deadly sandstorm, all objects are repurposed into contemporary pieces of jewellery

Known for her innovative craftsmanship, thought-provoking designs and genuine dedication to sustainability, her work has featured in fashion shoots for Vogue Italia and Harper’s Bazaar Arabia. Launching her eponymous brand in Beirut in 2016, Alexandra’s pieces have gained a cult international following, making waves as she spearheads a predominately male industry, with thanks to her technical prowess and unique methods.

Alexandra’s ability to think outside the box has always been natural for her, however came into fruition while studying jewellery and metalsmithing at Central Saint Martins. During her time there she found herself experimenting with bits and pieces around her work bench; from sandpaper shards, matchsticks, to gold dust – nothing was off limits. What makes Alexandra’s collections so exciting, is that she is able to give a new lease of life to objects and material which would otherwise go to waste. Her recent collection, No More Fish in the Sea, was inspired by an encounter with a Lebanese fisherman, who explained how the waters in Lebanon have become so polluted that he is only able to catch enough fish to feed his family. While visiting him, Alexandra was shown the variety of objects and pieces of rubbish that was pulled up in his net, instead of fish. The collection uses crushed aluminium and old tuna hooks, which she has beautifully transformed into contemporary pieces of jewellery.

No piece of jewellery is the same, because no moulds are used in the process and Alexandra casts each item directly in silver. This results in wonderful one-of-a kind rings, an array of asymmetrical earrings and stand out necklaces. Who knows what trash Alexandra will find next, but what we do know is that she will re-purpose it into something spectacular.
