We don't need to hark on about why we should all be thinking more sustainably – there's enough news about the climate crisis to clearly tell us that – but even for the best of us, we still need a nudge in the environmentally friendly direction to make the changes that'll better our planet.

In this day and age, a reusable coffee cup is no longer your get-out-of-jail-free-card for acting sustainably in other areas of your life. Now more than ever, we need to be putting our green thinking caps on and addressing how we can buy more sustainably with the clothes we wear, the beauty we put on our skin and the ornaments we place in our homes. So, this September, we're doing exactly that.

Our new 'Sustainable September' series will be highlighting the best sustainably-minded products and brands that range over fashion, beauty and homeware, everyday throughout the month, showing that there are earth-affable options that you can opt for. Today, we're looking at, Carolina K, a brand that is pioneering the way for zero waste within the fashion sphere.

Zero waste: two words that we would like to see more of when buying clothing. And, while not a lot of brands can boast these potent words in the description of their brand, Carolina K can. A pioneer in sustaining the craft of hand embroidered details made authentically by artisans from remote regions of Mexico and Peru, Carolina K is a lifestyle brand committed to combining tradition and culture, with style and sustainability.

Committed to the reintegration of artisanal products into the global market since 2005, founder of the eponymous brand Carolina, utilised her extensive knowledge of the industry and combined it with her background in music, to inspire and establish her own brand. After travelling the world with her husband and children, Carolina and her family settled in the town of Tepoztlan, Mexico, which created the unique opportunity for her to work with a cooperative of artisans who combine the traditional work of different cultures. Consequently, Carolina's work within these communities has become part of her DNA, philosophy and is now a key signature of the brand.

Their zero waste initiative allows the brand to use every last scrap of fabric left over from each collection, meaning they can extend the lifecycle of their old stock. And thus, enabling a perfectly circular fashion wheel, that means the brand is able to reduce their own amount of waste every year. That’s not all, by working closely with over 200 artisans in Mexico alone – who specialise in the development of hand-crochet and hand-loomed pieces – the brand are able to produce ottomans and other pieces in their home collection, without using any electricity, pesticides or chemicals. With an continuous reputation of supporting organisations and non-profits, Carolina K is able to give back to the communities and their families by providing work all year round.

Wasting less has never been more important, and with brands like Carolina K pioneering a sustainable and zero waste movement within the industry, we can’t help but want to shout about it from the roof tops.
