We don't need to hark on about why we should all be thinking more sustainably – there's enough news about the climate crisis to clearly tell us that – but even for the best of us, we still need a nudge in the environmentally friendly direction to make the changes that'll better our planet.

In this day and age, a reusable coffee cup is no longer your get-out-of-jail-free-card for acting sustainably in other areas of your life. Now more than ever, we need to be putting our green thinking caps on and addressing how we can buy more sustainably with the clothes we wear, the beauty we put on our skin and the ornaments we place in our homes. So, this September, we're doing exactly that.

Our new 'Sustainable September' series will be highlighting the best sustainably-minded products and brands that range over fashion, beauty and homeware, everyday throughout the month, showing that there are earth-affable options that you can opt for. Today, we're looking at sustainable brand, ESSĒN, whose timeless shoes prove that production waste is not necessary.

While trends have always been of upmost importance within the fashion industry, brands who have forever produced the timeless classics that continue to hang in our wardrobes are the true aficionados. For us at Because, the aforementioned will always favour over a multitude of en vogue pieces each season, which is why ESSĒN's back-to-basics approach have got our sustainable senses invigorated.

Founded in 2016 as a response against the market's saturation of poorly made and disposable products, ESSĒN have since been making shoes that are made to keep forever. Trans-seasonal in design and lovingly made by artisans in Portugal and Italy, it'll be hard to find a pair that you won't love for as long as they will last. But the real cherry on top of the cake; they've built their business model around small-batch production, meaning they only produce shoes when an order is placed. By working only by pre-orders, ESSĒN is able to minimise their waste by producing shoes that they know will be sold.

Whilst minimal in design, they certainly don't lack any flair. Take ESSĒN's 'Foundation Flat'; an elegant ballet pump that is equally as chic paired with jeans as it is with a day-to-night summer dress. The Italian soft leather style is available in shades of crimson, sky blue and a Ziggy Stardust approved silver – aka. a popping palette that will do all the talking.
