We don't need to hark on about why we should all be thinking more sustainably – there's enough news about the climate crisis to clearly tell us that – but even for the best of us, we still need a nudge in the environmentally friendly direction to make the changes that'll better our planet.

In this day and age, a reusable coffee cup is no longer your get-out-of-jail-free-card for acting sustainably in other areas of your life. Now more than ever, we need to be putting our green thinking caps on and addressing how we can buy more sustainably with the clothes we wear, the beauty we put on our skin and the ornaments we place in our homes. So, this September, we're doing exactly that.

Our new 'Sustainable September' series will be highlighting the best sustainably-minded products and brands that range over fashion, beauty and homeware, everyday throughout the month, showing that there are earth-affable options that you can opt for. Today, we're looking at the cult fashion brand RE/DONE, who have injected some retro into this summer by launching a new line of 70’s Runner trainers.

Shoes, glorious shoes!

Yes, most of us can admit that we own a fair few more pairs than necessary, and it seems that with an estimated 330 million pairs of shoes being sold each year within the UK alone, that the nation can’t resist opening their purses for a new iteration.

Having made the move from sportswear to high fashion in recent years, trainers are a favourite kick amongst all for their creative and comfortable design. But, with an MIT study showing that a typical pair of running shoes generates approximately 13.6 kilograms of CO2 emissions, treading the planet in trainers is proven to be more harmful than good. Thankfully, here to provide the sustainable sneaker that we’ll happily stride the earth in is RE/DONE, the pioneering sustainability fashion brand that has ventured into a new style of eco-friendly footwear.

Launched in Downtown Los Angeles in 2014 by denim gurus Sean Barron and Jamie Mazur, RE/DONE initially started off by upcycling preloved vintage jeans, hand tailoring them into modern shapes. Their unique process quickly grew the business, and became the ‘it’ jean brand seen on the likes of Kendall Jenner, Emily Ratajkowski and Alessandra Ambrosio, to name a few.

Their latest addition to their roster of sustainable strides is the 70s Runner, a modern reinvention of the iconic nylon running sneakers of the 1970’s, which pays direct tribute to the decade that inspired it. With a healthy dose of retro, the sneakers are available in red, navy and white, and have a nylon and suede outer body, reminiscent of the decades seminal style. Think: Puma Cyclones and Reebok Cougars.

The stylish footwear is handmade in Italy by expertly trained and dedicated artisans, and is shipped in completely recycled and biodegradable packaging (obviously). And of course, like everything RE/DONE creates, their sneakers are meant to be worn everyday, last a lifetime, and will grow better with each wear. We’ll take one in every colour please!
