Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams has just opened in Doha, Qatar, having debuted in 2017 at the Paris Musee D'Art Decoratifs. Since then it's travelled the world celebrating the vision and heritage of Christian Dior from 1947 to today, through the curation of Maria Grazia Chiuri's feminist eye.
Since taking helm as the first female creative director of womenswear, Maria has developed Dior to not only become a fashion and accessories powerhouse, but a platform to celebrate, commission and share with the world the twin passions of female empowerment and sacredness of craft. Her customers are rewarding her and the maison for it (both old and new alike) and it means that she's able to put on the map small, family-led artisanal houses and global makers in Puglia, Africa and Greece in a way that no other large houses are. She's also creating and publicly sharing video content of the normally secretive supplier, which is unheard of, and yet this shows how Maria's support has enabled her to push the brand into what it is today.
You may have caught this exhibition at the V&A where it was adapted for English lore – royal dresses on display etc – but in Doha, what's unique about their version is that nine couture pieces from the Sheika Al Mouza’s own collection are on display, – from John Galliano to Raf Simons to Maria Grazia Chiuri's own adapted pieces.
