Because there’s no place quite like the Great British high street – from its niche independents, to seasonal pop-ups and those expansive yet elegant department stores – Because Magazine is on a mission to champion the bricks-and-mortar of London in all its glory. Each week, we’ll beeline to the rails of our favourite retailers to scope out the must-have pieces and in-store exclusives that are more than worth making an effort for. This week, we're at Studio Nicholson on Broadwick Street to find out more about what we should be wearing this season.

Much like the perennial minimalism that Studio Nicholson's design ethos is built upon, their new flagship store in Soho follows suit. Found on Broadwick Street and designed by founder Nick Wakeman, their newly opened retail space matches it's colour palette to that of the brand's collections – most noticeably, the Dove natural rubber floor is the same shade as their ever-popular Moonstar shoe – and uses a mix of natural and man-made materials to reflect the tactile yet modern nature of Studio Nicholson.

To guide us through what pieces we should be picking up from this wish-we-could-stay-here-all-day type of store, we asked retail manager, Joe Vasquez, on his three must-have items.

What… Slide Canvas Cross Body Bag in navy.

Why… “This bag is so practical, you can fit so much in it. The design gives something playful to your outfit, because you can wear it across your body or over your shoulder. It’s light and made from canvas, so the texture goes with anything – it can be quite formal or very casual. We also have this bag in leather, which I think goes better with evening wear. In canvas, it’s so durable – it’s difficult to get dirty!”

What… Sorte pleated cotton-twill trousers in kelp.

Why… “These wide-leg trousers are not a silhouette you see that often, so it’s instantly recognisable as Studio Nicholson. The quality is so high, when you put them on the structure stays perfectly in shape. Because of the pleats, they look great when you’re walking, and the construction means that they’re as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside. They’re designed to come to the ankles, but the hems are made so that each leg can be taken down for taller customers – so they’re adaptable for a perfect fit. You’d never know from looking at them, but you can take out the stitches and gain another five centimetres. And that’s the same for all our trousers. I think that’s really cool.”

What… Piero shirt in milk.

Why… “This is the piece that Nick has been giving to all the staff. It’s super wearable and a classic. Customers love it because it can be worn oversized or very fitted; you can play so much with the silhouette and build a look through layering. Studio Nicholson is all about layering, it completely changes the dynamic of an outfit. This shirt is the perfect modular piece. It goes with everything through every season!”
