Since writer, director and producer, Emerald Fennell’s sophomore film hit cinemas a fortnight ago the fashion pack haven't been able to keep quiet. And it's not just protagonist Jacob Elordi’s character, a posh golden boy with an unexpected eyebrow piercing, that’s got hearts racing and everyone talking.

For better or for worse, this divisive new gothic has captured our imaginations with its mid-noughties styling – think metallic fringe get-ups, smudged kohl liner, footless tights, the aforementioned ‘edgy’ facial piercing and all the popped polo shirt collars one could ever ask for. Set in 2006, the film borrows from a yet-to-be-romanticised era, that all feels a little too familiar to be anything but cool – for now!

Despite the cringe-worthy indie sleaze meets noughties preppy aesthetic, there’s no shortage of fashion “moments” in the period film. And it's fair to say that, costume designer Sophie Canale (who also does the costumes for Bridgeton) understood the assignment.

Christopher Kane loaned elastic bandage minidresses from his spring/summer 2007 London Fashion Week debut to the cast; as did Pam Hogg, a tastemaker of the era known for her sequinned emblazoned outfits, with loyal clients from Kate Moss to Björk and Gaga. Rosamund Pike’s character Elspeth, the mother of the family, wore gowns borrowed from the Valentino archives. While Chanel also opened up its 2000s treasure trove and loaned looks for Carey Mulligan’s troubled character Pamela.

Aside from the glamour, the costume department scoured resell apps like Vinted, Depop and eBay to pull secondhand pieces from popular brands at the time like Jane Norman, Jack Wills and Ralph Lauren, which were washed and worn in to achieve a borrowed “from daddy” look. And even though, the film feels like a slightly unpleasant reminder of the recent past, we’re kind of obsessed with its commitment to nostalgic noughties dressing.
