Ever since 19-year-old Kate Moss arrived at the Elite Model Agency Look of the Year party, in that iconic barely-there dress in 1993, the sheer look has never truly left the spotlight. What was then still a rather daring look has since been recreated countless times, even by the model's very own daughter, Lila, who wore a black rendition of the dress at the British Fashion Awards last month.

Since Kate’s mega moment, celebrities have been inseparable from their naked dresses at glamorous occasions in recent years – from Rihanna and Florence Pugh to the entire Kardashian clan. But as the red carpet reopens, after a brief dormant spell in the wake of SAG-AFTRA strikes, sheer clothing is back and better than ever. With the transparent trend set to become an everyday styling option, taking the look from the runway and red carpet to a high street near you.

The grand return to Hollywood was ushered in by the 81st Golden Globe Awards, where celebrities spared no expense in making the perfect red carpet comeback. This event marked not only the official return of red carpet formalities but of sheer ensemble too, with countless stars opting for the latest trend that is persistently infiltrating our feeds.

Emma Stone shimmered with each step in a plunging sequinned gown by Louis Vuitton accented with delicate embroidered flowers, while Rosamund Pike framed her face with the silhouette of a sumptuous sheer lace apple from Dior Couture, fit with matching sheer floral embroidered sleeves. It was not only the ladies who donned translucent textiles, Jeremy Allen White, the internet’s latest heartthrob (and ours) captured hearts in a simple back sheer button-up, peeking out from underneath a coordinated blazer.

But truth be told, all eyes were on Hunter Schafer as a windswept wrap of sheer silk organza by Prada sent her drifting down the carpet – perhaps, the red carpet moment we were all waiting for after the ethereal gowns hit the Prada runway back in September when sheer fabric dominated the SS24 collections.

Making unforgettable appearances throughout the season, this trend doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere as we enter the new year, so get inspired to lean into some sheer sensibilities and read up on the Because team’s favourite Spring/Summer sheer looks…

We begin in London, where a hoard of designers paid homage to the iconic Kate Moss look in the city where it all began. At 16Arlington, see-through sequin scales met a sheer slip to aquatic effect, while at Simone Rocha, roses were draped with translucent coverings to construct bustling bouquets.

Designers showing in Paris didn't shy away from the sheer spectacle either. At Acne, a schoolgirl chic plaid moved across the distorted seams of a sheer high-neck dress, and at Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton paid tribute to the house’s late founder whose tragically beautiful work is symbolised in this look, blooming from the darkness of a shroud-like slip.

But it's safe to say that designers in Milan mastered the see-through look for SS24. Futuristic fantasies came to fruition at Sportmax with this semi-sheer look presenting a utilitarian alternative to the typically delicate textile, and Prada patch-worked sheer materials in a modest rendition of the trend. Black and polka-dot textiles met at a cinched waist to create a look that epitomised business at the top and party at the bottom. Mrs Prada’s ode to sheer looked as good on the red carpet as it did on the runway, but here’s how to shop the trend for the everyday…
