Scent and Sensibility

Subtitled ‘The Great Indoors’, the brand’s new bathing collection brings their classic – some might say signature – scent Rain Wood to a range of personal products. The collection’s hand wash, shower gel, and soap bar sees Perfumer H continuing in their philosophy of scent as a pathway to an encompassing, bodily experience. 

The original Rain Wood fragrance is a recreation of the olfactory landscapes of the Scottish Highlands and the Yorkshire Pennines, where Lyn Harris, Perfumer H’s founder and creative director, grew up. The fragrance begins with a green, slightly spicy note, featuring fresh, piney galbanum and elemi, before transitioning to a woody base of juniper, cedarwood, and patchouli. Recalling the scent of petrichor that emanates from the ground after a rainstorm, it is mystical and somewhat otherworldly, an example of what Harris does best. After studying in Paris and Grasse to become Britain's first ‘classically trained’ female nose, she focused on natural scents, learning to masterfully derive the chemical combinations required to bring them to life as perfumes.

Compared to the eau de parfum, the Bathing collection is a milder affair. The soaps are delicately scented, and the subtle fragrance of the body lotion is long-lasting. Like Perfumer H’s fragrances, the projection of the soaps and lotions is minimal; the scent lingers close to the body, only announcing itself from centimetres away. This intimacy captures something of the clandestine nature of bathing – you don’t want to be caught in the act. In the solace of a wild swim you can hold onto the belief, if only for the duration of your dip, that you are the only person in the world.
