Because It's Good | Oct 20, 2025

When theatre people rally, they do it with imagination. This week, over 100 of the UK’s most visionary stage designers – the artists who conjure whole worlds behind the curtain – are auctioning their original sketches, models and artworks to support children in Gaza.

By Caroline Issa

The auction, Theatre Designers Unite, is the brainchild of Georgia Lowe and Miriam Buether, two powerhouse designers who decided that creativity could – and should – do more. Together, they’ve assembled a remarkable lineup: Bunny Christie, Tom Scutt, Soutra Gilmour, Vicki Mortimer, Ian MacNeil, Anna Fleischle, Tim Hatley, and many more. It’s a roll call of the people shaping the look of British theatre today.

Up for grabs? Rare and beautiful pieces from productions that have defined the stage in recent years – including SIXGuys and Dolls (The Bridge)Prima FacieOperation MincemeatMy Neighbour Totoro, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Many are signed, some even by cast members, and all carry a slice of the magic that begins on a designer’s desk.

Every penny raised will go to the Gaza Formula Fund, the grassroots initiative founded by Lowe and her Gaza-based partner Izziddeen to provide formula milk, nappies and essentials for babies and young children caught in the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Since July, the fund has already raised nearly £300,000 – a testament to what can happen when empathy meets action.

As Georgia and Miriam put it, “This auction isn’t just about raising money. It’s about solidarity. It shows the strength of feeling within theatre – and the power of art to speak out.”

The online auction launches 16 October on JumbleBee and runs for two weeks. For theatre lovers, it’s a rare chance to own a piece of stage history. For everyone else, it’s a reminder that creativity can be a force for change – on and off the stage. Learn more here
