While this year’s Met Gala largely failed to deliver in the ways we had hoped, with few designers reawakening the archive or indeed interpreting the theme in non-literal ways, Spanish singer Rosalía took the Sleeping Beauty subject in an exciting and unexpected direction.
Her connection to the vague theme was based on the feeling of falling asleep and how the first thing you see when you close your eyes is black. The result was a black strapless column skirt set courtesy of Maria Grazia Chiuri for Dior, complete with a floor-sweeping tailcoat train and accessorised with a delicate netted veil. According to Vogue, the wool and silk look, took over 1,800 hours of work by members of the atelier.
This red-carpet alliance foreshadowed the newly announced partnership between Rosalía and Dior, as the singer becomes the brand's latest global ambassador – an announcement that comes as no surprise given her front-row appearances at the house’s last two runway shows. Rosalía's first Dior campaign sees the star reimagine the iconic Lady Dior bag, with just a piano and microphone as accessories. Captured by Collier Schorr, the stripped-back black and white images highlight the bag's timeless clean lines and sleek allure.
Originally introduced in 1995 and named after Princess Diana, the Lady Dior bag has since undergone numerous iterations, in a spectrum of colours, finishes, and personalised charms. Rosalía now joins an illustrious lineup of Dior ambassadors, including the likes of Jisoo, Anya Taylor-Joy, Rachel Zegler, and Jennifer Lawrence, solidifying her status as a global style icon and honouring Dior's affinity with the music world.
