Woman in Blonde Wig, from ‘Chungking Express’
Chunking Express, is considered by many to be Wong Kar-wai’s greatest film; of the four main characters: two heart-broken cops, a waitress and a drug dealer in a blonde wig. She's the one we'll get inspired by. Although not given a name, Brigette Lin’s ‘Woman in Blonde Wig’ has enchanted generations of cinema- goers, without ever lifting her sunglasses.
Margot Tenenbaum, from ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’
Over the years, Margot Tenenbaum’s style has been imitated over and over, and with good reason: her mink coat and loafers remain as classic today as when the film was released, 23 years ago. It's only the real fur that's gone out of fashion. Her eclectic style is a key part of the iconic visual language that came out of the film, and is surprisingly easy to replicate (the attitude is half of it – when talking to people, say as little as possible whilst staring intently at them. And if you must smoke, for the love of God, do so secretly).
Edie Sedgwick
The only actual person to have existed in reality on this list, although arguably a persona she created, Edie Sedgwick was an It Girl for a reason, and her style was a large part of it. Mini dresses, and we mean mini, opaque tights and chandelier earrings are all that are required for this costume. For the extreme of you out there - and Edie was extreme - just wear a black tank top and black tights.
Elaine, from ‘The Love Witch’
Elaine, the eponymous Love Witch, regularly seduces, and subsequently leaves scores of heartbroken men, who are utterly helpless to her charms (and spells). Although her 1960s wardrobe is filled with instantly recognizable looks, its her all-pink tea outfit that is the most eye catching. When dressing up as Elaine, her blue eyeshadow and bold eyeliner are non-negotiable, so maybe practice beforehand to get the right flick and thickness.
The Lisbon Sisters as observed by others, from ‘The Virgin Suicides’
Trapped in their houses, and in the bodies of teenage girls, the Lisbon Sisters become a canvas on which other people’s desires are projected on; they are not viewed as singular, unique beings, but rather, as a multi-headed entity. Their homogenous existence is personified in their identical, shapeless prom dresses, and their indistinguishable night gowns. For this costume, make it a group activity and get your friends to all dress up in similar night gowns, with little to no makeup; make sure that from a distance, you meld into one.
