From Dorothy’s yellow brick road to today’s runways, the red shoe steps into the spotlight once more

Red shoes seem to be tiptoeing across our feeds. While in the cooler months, our focus was on red tights and socks, the statement scarlet shoe has confidently stepped onto the runway and street alike. A simple styling hack set to revive the wardrobe combinations we all rely on, the occasional rouge shoe cannot be missed at the moment.

The striking appeal of slipping into a pair of red shoes dates back centuries. In ancient Egypt, red was linked to the powerful sun god Ra, with red attire signifying status and wealth. Then during the Middle Ages, red shoes were a mark of power and nobility. Louis XIV famously wore red-heeled shoes to denote his royal status, distinguishing the aristocracy from the common folk.

The most famous red shoes, however, came to life in the 1939 film adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. Originally described as silver in L. Frank Baum’s book, Dorothy’s slippers were changed to red to show off a revolutionary approach to technicolour filmmaking. Dorothy’s ruby shoes symbolised hope and the quest for belonging, becoming a cultural touchstone in fashion and film.

In contemporary fashion, red shoes have always signified something special. Designers like Christian Louboutin have leveraged the power of red, making the wildly recognisable red sole synonymous with luxury and sensuality. While Gucci coined a new cherry hue last year, for its big rebrand, which resulted in high-shine red shoes in abundance on proceeding runways.

London-based womenswear brand Tove made its shoe debut on the runway back in 2023, a particular stand out was the brand's vivid red pair of leather slip-ons, which are now available to buy. Worn with a sweeping gold silk dress and gathered white ruching, the red flats added a playful touch to the sleek collection.

The red shoe trend also steps into sportswear with Wales Bonner’s cult Adidas collaboration leaving us all pining after some rouge runners – Converse, Nike and Onitsuka Tiger all provide ample options too.

Today, red shoes can elevate any tired and tested outfit. Whether it’s fire-engine red satin Mary Janes, oxblood boots or glossy cherry slingbacks the red shoe adds a pop of colour and excitement. Red’s ability to attract attention and convey a sense of urgency makes it a powerful choice for footwear – all year around!
