Winter Office Dressing
Between sweaty commutes and dodgy office heating, it can be hard to know what to wear during those winter workdays. The because team break down their cold weather non-negotiables, from slouchy cashmere to impractical shoe choices...

There are plenty of things to take into consideration when it comes to winter office dressing. The bitter walk to the station. The sweaty public transport. The office and its dizzying temperatures, a pendulum swinging between either too hot or too cold. While the opening sequence of The Devil Wears Prada depicts a considered glamour when it comes to office dressing at a fashion magazine, perhaps the reality is much more relaxed…maybe.

I hate winter dressing. Always have, always will. I worship at the altar of the sun and yet here I am, residing on a cold island in Northern Europe. So when those temperatures drop, it really is me and my Uniqlo heat techs against the rest of the world. My favourites are the black longsleeve with the scooped ballerina neckline, layer a ribbed white vest underneath to create contrast and visual layers. Despite the biting winds, trousers will always be low waist and I simply grin and bear the chill (AKA complain loudly and make it everyone else’s problem) I love a flared leg, giving me that elongated shape even amidst the bulkiness of winter fashion. My shoe of choice are a pair of completely impractical Miu Miu ballet flats, beloved and battered, they survived a house fire, they can survive London winter. Despite being a summer girl, my two favourite fabrics are fur and leather (sorry PETA). A thrifted black leather bomber or my completely obnoxious fox fur coat (vintage, I promise!) will be on my outwear roster this season. What better way to combat winter than with a more slavic approach to style?

For me my winter workwear consists of dualities. The forever unpredictable weather means options are key and my wardrobe becomes practically bi-coastal. Strategically placing my flats consisting of suede and satin firmly in the office whilst my trusty GH Bass loafers are given the rough-and-tumble commuter role in my footwear rotation. My mango trench has its personal coat stand by the front door ready for outdoor adventures while my blazers remain wrapped around the shoulders of my desk chair, ready for me to assume my professional role. Living the two lives can be exhausting, however, one benefit to the winter season is discovering all of those items we promised ourselves to be a cost to wear investment. For me, this was my green Loewe cashmere scarf. And as someone whose wardrobe primarily consists of a gradient between black to more black, coloured knit accessories become my item of interest in winter whilst keeping me toasty in the Monday morning meetings!

I grew up in Montreal, Canada where the winters would get to -20celcius with wind chill. So relax. Winter in London is a pleasure, especially when you get to wake up to fat flakes of snow that instantly melt on our hot, city pavements. But I do love to bundle up and I’ve been leaning into my Lumei puffer coats, Barrie and Madkhai cashmere oversized sweaters worn with Joseph leather leggings, as well as my Legres boots. Winter is also when my heavy denim comes out (my light tailored cotton trousers a tad too thin for these chilly days) and I just got a two-toned Mother, wide legged style that I’ll be pairing with tailored shirting layered on top of turtlenecks and a jacket. I play with colour in my knitwear, from Vince to Me + Em to Erdem and Eudon Choi, I live in sweaters these days and the more colourful, the better for my mood.
