Mexico 66 Tgrs

Because We're Obsessed

The Onitsuka Mexico 66 Tgrs

Just Because... | Apr 2, 2025

We have a feeling these sporty ballerinas are going to be a springtime staple!

The subject of lookbooks and think pieces, the ballet flat, despite its dainty characteristics, has dominated the footwear scene for the past few years. Flippantly feminine yet fashionably democratic, the humble ballet flat serves as a chic cheat code, a bastion of style, and a harbinger of blisters. Despite our unwavering dedication to fashion, we can admit that the constant limping to our bus stop at the end of the day grows a little tiring. Paying nimble attention to the (sometimes literal) cries from the fashion fleet, Onitsuka Tiger’s latest release promises an antidote to our woes and an ideal addition to our spring shoe rotation.

We all know and love the brand’s iconic Mexico 66 sneaker (as seen on Uma Thurman in ‘Kill Bill’ and Bella Hadid in Brooklyn), but the Mexico 66 Tgrs is Onitsuka’s answer to the ballet-flat-ification of footwear. Combining the comfort of their sneakers with the detailing of a pump, the shoe is given a charming new look with a slim silhouette and Mary-Jane straps. The classic sporty stripes are redesigned in a flower-cut shape, and the color palette features a metallic silver pair alongside more muted shades of mauve and ecru. Onitsuka Tiger isn't exactly entering unknown territory, as the brand’s lace-up ballet flats, released at the turn of the millennium, were a hit then and perhaps an even bigger draw now, with Depop and Vinted harboring a few rare pairs of the silky slip-ons. If the 2010s were defined by designer sneakers, then the 2020s are all about the ballet pump. With that being said, the combination of the two is an intriguing answer to the trend cycles, and the Mexico 66 Tgrs stylistically embody this more transient approach to dressing and personal style that we’re seeing.

We gave a pair of the Mexico 66 Tgrs a test drive at the office, and let’s just say we’ve all been influenced! As spring weather affords rare glimpses of sunnier days to come, we’re phasing out our bulkier favorites for some daintier options, and while the bitter weather is letting up, our schedules are not. The comfy track soles of the Mexico 66 Tgrs lend themselves to our urbanite errand runs, while the sweet buckle detailing and balletic silhouette make for a perfect addition to looks styled with spring in mind. Not yet ready to sacrifice sneaker ease but still wanting to elevate your outfits with a more feminine touch? Well, you’re in luck, as these sporty ballerinas are available to shop now!
