London-based, Argentina-born, Lucila Safdie wants to design into her pieces multitudes of girlhood that are often lost in translation. Playing with romantic elements she looks to represent the feminine voices she resonated with when she was younger — think of her collections as the coming-of-age of ready-to-wear. Her work explores how young girls navigate adolescence, especially through their internet presence: a place where they can express themselves without school or parents around to police them. Safdie’s message resonated with the latest pop new-entry, Addison Rae, who commissioned her Wembley look to her. Needless to say Lucila Safdie’s LFW presentation will be filled to the brim with London’s coolest girls.

Why do you do what you do? What keeps you motivated to keep creating fashion collections?

Because it’s fun and it allows me to bring the ideas and objects into the world that I would like to see, or I think are missing. It really motivates me, the thought that there really are an infinite amount of ideas still to explore and opportunities to represent from perspectives that haven’t been shown yet.

What is the best part about creating in London, right now?

Having my best friends around me and living with them - they inspire me <3

What is one ritual you do in preparation for LFW that people wouldn’t expect?

Jumping jacks with the girls in the studio every 30 minutes and eating candy.

If you had to describe your latest collection with one track – what would it be?

May it be - Enya

Over the past few challenging years - with Brexit, post-Covid, with the retail landscape a bit of a mess - how have you thought about what you make and how to make it connect with your customer?

I just do what I would like to see in the world and hope other girls connect with it! Try not to overthink the rest, at the end of the day, it’s just clothes.

How does your work reflect the complexity of womanhood?

It’s the thing that drives what I do, I want my work to uncover the dimensions of girlhood that don’t get a platform usually and that only other women would understand or appreciate.

How was designing Addison Rae’s Wembley look? Who is another dream collaboration?

It was so fun, I love her and everything she does. Lucila Safdie is all about the love of being a girl and being surrounded by other girls and she really represents that. Another dream collaboration would be the queen Lana Del Rey!

If your upcoming collection was used as the wardrobe of any film, which one would it be?

A remake of Picnic at Hanging Rock that would be directed by Andrea Arnold.

What is the Lucila Safdie girl like?

Cute, fun and smart.

If you could bring an icon back to life to wear your designs, who would it be and why?

Brittany Murphy - because I love her and she deserved better
