10 Questions with Oscar Ouyang
Fairy-like and chic knitwear is Oscar Ouyang's bread and butter
The CSM alumni has just made his runway debut — it's fantastical, it's dreamy and all we ever wanted from a spring knit
Oscar Ouyang’s path to his first London Fashion Week show is not as predictable as others; after graduating from Central Saint Martins MA in 2023 he decided not to jump into the LFW schedule straightaway, but focused on building clientele first. It was clear people had an eye out for his work even before his graduate collection hit the runway, with it being on the Dover Street Market shop floor barely after the show was over. From then Ouyang’s mythical and fable knitwear designs have been shipped all over, from New York to South Korea, being sold to the coolest, coziest, people. He’s finally made his official runway debut this LFW and we sat down with him to talk all about it!
Why do you do what you do? What keeps you motivated to keep creating fashion collections?
Fashion has always been an escapism for me. I like story telling, and I like good textures and patterns. The motivation comes from the daily life, you find details in everything and you tie them all in with fashion.
What is the best part about creating in London, right now?
London has the best creative scene I’ve experienced so far, being the hub of all sorts of creatives and everyone is very open minded to collab.
What is one ritual you do in preparation for LFW that people wouldn’t expect?
I took my parents to the stone henge and made a wish there.
If you had to describe your latest collection with one track – what would it be?
Blade bird by Oklou and mixed by Nick León
Over the past few challenging years - with Brexit, post-Covid, with the retail landscape a bit of a mess - how have you thought about what you make and how to make it connect with your customer? If your vision and aesthetic is strong enough the customer will always be drawn to you.
What is the Oscar Ouyang world like?
It’s very fairy and chic, with medieval motifs and folk elements in the story telling.
What's been your main source of inspiration this season?
The collection is titled ‘Don’t Shoot the Messenger’, you have owl, eagle, and pigeon as messenger birds, whilst they got shot, the miscommunication leads to the chaos. Nowadays everyone is living in their information cocoon, we receive messages that are filtered through the algorithm and the already fractured world is being turned apart.
How is this collection different from your past work? How do you evolve as a creative? More elevated, more chic, more wearable. It’s a collection that balance both playful ideas, functionality and comfort.
What makes knit an exciting technique to work with?
It’s the craftsmanships behind this traditional technique. The idea of reinventing something that people have such a stereotype with.
Have you found a technique, or a supplier, or a contributing craftsperson that has excited you to incorporate into your new collection?
We started working with a new medium to create volume inside our signature pocket knit. It creates a really amazing shape. We also have a supplier for the feathers from the meat industry, so we got really fabulous feathers in a more sustainable way.
