What… A trio of Gucci lipstick collections by Alessandro Michele.

Why...
An ode to the world of cinema and the made-up lips of Hollywood, these lipsticks are brilliantly full of colour in a modern broad palette.

We can’t give lipstick enough airtime. Only recently, by way of self-proclaimed red-lipstick devotee, Rachel Felder, we were celebrating and tracing crimson through the ages – and now, with Gucci’s latest launch we’re back to revel in the language of lipstick.

A taster of what’s to come for Gucci Makeup by Alessandro Michele, three lipstick collections mark the brand’s new beauty story. Born from a belief that makeup should exalt flaws and never mask, and inspired by the made-up lips of Hollywood’s stars from the Golden Age, the collections are unapologetically bold with their diverse formulations.

All scented with violet ("Lipstick is the most fascinating because it has always had a beautiful scent, writes Alessandro"), the collections differ for the nuances of their palettes and finishes. While Rouge à Lèvres Satin delivers intense colour (there's 58 shades, including vivid reds, rich fuchsia and black) in its creamy and lightweight formula, Rouge à Lèvres Voile's imparts moisture and a sheer finish in 18 shades, like dark raspberry violet and tawny brown. Elsewhere, Baume à Lèvres melts onto the lips to enhance the natural smoothness and texture with three iterations: a transparent formula and a pink and plum hue.

Giving equal thought to the designs of the lipstick tubes themselves, and in keeping with Alessandro's inspiration of silver screen sirens of the 1950s, the lipsticks also serve a secondary purpose as objets d'art. Borrowing inspiration from Art Deco, Rouge à Lèvres Satin is etched with a decorative style in a gold tube; looking to a pink rosebud print on ivory with a gold base, Rouge à Lèvres Voile looks as if it might belong on a 1940s dressing table; Baume à Lèvres was chosen to represent an attention to colour, before pink was a symbol of the feminine world post-war.
