Back in November, as World Vegan Day returned in its 24th year, we got to thinking about vegan beauty and just where our makeup lands on the spectrum of vegannatural and organic – walking the walk with high-performance maquillage brands to know, from Pixi, to Ilia Beauty, and Hourglass.

Now, as January gets underway with its #Veganuary moniker – a movement that’s been introduced to set the tone for the year ahead – we’re taking a good hard look at our bathroom cabinets once more. And, this time, it’s skincare that’s going under the microscope…

No longer confined to the aisles of health food stores alone, vegan beauty is on the up; along with eschewing parabens, silicones and synthetic fragrances, brands are working to create cruelty-free skincare formulas for a more mindful audience.

In the cleansing department, Odacité combines activated charcoal and rhassoul clay with peppermint and tea tree in its Black Mint Cleanser, promising to enliven complexions and extract dirt, grime and pollution. Meanwhile, S5 Skincare combines high-altitude rosehip oil (extracted from Chilean wild rosehip seeds) with papaya enzymes and bright orange Arctic Sea buckthorn to exfoliate, nourish and hydrate in its gentle (and 97% organic) Nourish Cleanser. Mm mm mm!

Marrying more than eight key ingredients – including prickly pear and pomegranate, ginger root extract, organic fireweed flower and Abyssinian oil – the master of botanical alchemy, Amly Botanicals, has created a non-comedogenic soothing oil, the Light Super-Fine Face Oil, that makes for a protective and moisturising base under makeup. Elsewhere, radiant skin is all but a mask away with May Lindstrom’s bio-dynamic, organic and sustainable Problem Solver Mask, which harnesses antioxidant-rich raw cacao, activated bamboo charcoal and exotic spices...

Start 2019 as you mean to go on. Embracing veganism is a breeze! (Who'd have thunk?)
