The season of love is upon us. Well, Valentine’s day, anyhow. And with it, an opportunity to change up your normal maquillage routine and inject some colour. Sometimes it is nice to have the excuse to do a little more, to go the extra mile. In this episode of How To, modelled on actress Anna Shaffer, Rachel Singer Clark shows us how to play with hues and tones to create a subtly smoky Valentine’s eye.

For the emphasis to be on those come-hither eyes it is best to keep the skin looking natural, almost bare. For the lips a restrained sheen of gloss will help to complete the look without seeming overdone. This simple make-up idea takes only a few minutes and it is best to start with the eyes before moving onto the rest of the face, so you can clean up any fall out to create a lived-in smudgy eye that still looks clean and defined. Let Cupid’s arrows rain down!

Step One
Line the eye along the upper lash line with Elizabeth Arden High Drama Eyeliner in Midnight Dream. Blend this slightly to soften the harsh graphic line, whilst retaining the intensity of the colour.

Step Two
Using a rounded brush, apply Clé de Peau cream eyeshadow in shade 301 along the lower lash line and over the lid, focusing along the lash line and in the centre of the eye to soften the line of kohl.  Blend the eyeshadow outwards, to create a soft but defined shape.

Step Three
Apply eyeshadow in the shade Cannes from Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Riviera Palette over the lid to set the cream shadow.

Step Four
Lightly press Pat McGrath’s pigment shadow in the shade Electron from her MTHRSHP: DARK GALAXY palette onto the lid, concentrating on the centre. If necessary, reline the upper lash line with kohl to intensify the colour.

Step Five
Apply the M.A.C Pearlglide Intense Liner in Designer Purple to the inner corner of the eye and bring it down to the lower lash line to add dimension and depth to the look. Use muni cotton buds to clean the edges, if necessary.

Step Six
Brushing upwards, fill in the brows with Eyeko Brow Gel.

Step Seven
Add lashings of IT Cosmetics Hello Lashes Mascara on both the top and bottom lashes to create a super-intense look.

Step Eight
Use a small amount of IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+ in Tan to cover the skin and help reduce pigmentation without adding texture.

Step Nine
Using your finger, dab the Kevyn Aucoin Elegant Lip Gloss in colour Anastasia onto the lips.
