Everyone, the moment has arrived. Today is the day that Hermès’ first venture into beauty has become available for purchase. Announced back in February, and after 183 years in the fashion business, the lipstick collection, Rouge Hermès, marks a new métier for the house.

Created under the heading of artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas, the range includes 24 shades of lipstick, a lip balm, universal lip pencil and brush in lacquered wood. He has described the collection as a coming together of “objects, materials, colours and gestures, and the new sensory field of texture, developed freely through shared affinities and connections.”

Each of the 24 colours (24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris being the location of the first Hermès store) are unapologetically colourful. There are subtle pale pinks, deep plums and the unmistakable Hermès Orange Boite, all of which have been chosen from the brand’s archive of over 900 leather shades and 75,000 silk swatches.

10 of the Rouge Hermès lipsticks are matte, recalling soft fine-grained leather, and have a pointed tip for precise application. The rest are inspired by the maison’s iconic Kelly Bag and have a rounded glossy satin finish. There are also three limited-edition lipsticks, Violet Insensé, Rose Inouï and Corail Fou, presented in tri-colour tubes.

Pierre Hardy, the creative director of shoes and jewellery, designed the surprisingly weighty refillable lacquered metal cases, which close with a satisfying click. And each lipstick is scented with sandalwood, arnica and angelica, a blend developed by Hermès perfumer Christine Nagel.

The Wall Street Journal has already hailed Rouge Hermès as the “Birkin of Lipsticks” - an accolade indeed - and this success set to continue with Hermès releasing new items every six months.
