In this day and age, a reusable coffee cup is no longer your get-out-of-jail-free-card for acting sustainably in other areas of your life. Now more than ever, we need to be putting our green thinking caps on and addressing how we can buy more sustainably with the clothes we wear, the beauty we put on our skin and the ornaments we place in our homes. So, this September, we're doing exactly that.
Our new 'Sustainable September' series will be highlighting the best sustainably-minded products and brands that range over fashion, beauty and homeware, everyday throughout the month, showing that there are earth-affable options that you can opt for. Today, we're looking at plastic free beauty brand, Beauty Kubes, and their exciting new innovation of plastic free products.
If we asked you to take a look around your bathroom and tell us how many plastic-free products there were, how many would you find? From shampoos, conditioners, body-washes, cleansers, moisturisers and hair masks, it's rare to see them housed in an eco-friendly alternative. It's estimated that 8m metric tonnes of plastic enters our oceans, on top of the estimated 150m metric tonnes that currently circulate in marine environments; with the beauty industry being one of the main contributors to single-use plastics.
Here to stop our unnecessary plastic consumption that using our mainstream beauty brands often cause is Beauty Kubes; the completely plastic-free haircare company who are changing the way we wash our hair, one cube at a time.
Originally ‘Eve of St. Agnes’, the brand's one-cube-a-wash formula was inspired by programmes like BBC’s Blue Planet II and the work of local Cornish based charity, Surfers Against Sewage. After seeing some truly frightening statistics, the brand felt compelled to take a new direction and go completely plastic free.
The Beauty Kubes goal is to offer natural, organic and vegan-friendly products that are completely free from plastic, sulphates, silicones, and other materials that can have highly adverse effects, not only on the environment, but also on your skin and your general health. Made by hand in Cornwall, the facilities are also powered by green energy from solar and wind turbines. If that’s not enough, all products are packaged up in cardboard and biodegradable packaging. Whilst a plastic-free way of life is newly explored territory for the beauty community, Beauty Kubes range of solid shampoo and beauty products are made entirely free from plastics. We can barely contain our excitement!
So, how do you use an unusually solid haircare product? Firstly, step in the shower; take a single cube and rub between wet hands, until it becomes a smooth paste, and smooth into your, yes, wet hair, where it will start to foam. Then voilà, you'll have gorgeous clean hair without any of the guilty conscience.
We can't wait to see a world where plastic is the thing of the past, and now that we can start compiling haircare cubes into our beauty cupboards, we're quickly striving towards a greener future.
