We don't need to hark on about why we should all be thinking more sustainably – there's enough news about the climate crisis to clearly tell us that – but even for the best of us, we still need a nudge in the environmentally friendly direction to make the changes that'll better our planet.

In this day and age, a reusable coffee cup is no longer your get-out-of-jail-free-card for acting sustainably in other areas of your life. Now more than ever, we need to be putting our green thinking caps on and addressing how we can buy more sustainably with the clothes we wear, the beauty we put on our skin and the ornaments we place in our homes. So, this September, we're doing exactly that.

Our new 'Sustainable September' series will be highlighting the best sustainably-minded products and brands that range over fashion, beauty and homeware, everyday throughout the month, showing that there are earth-affable options that you can opt for. Today, we're looking at pioneering brand, Biossance, that not only created a cure for Malaria, but runs an eco-friendly successful skin care brand.

Philanthropic efforts are always a welcomed extra to a brand's bio, but there aren't many that can say they've created the cure for an infectious disease. Biossance are part of the few that can.

The brand continues using innovative biotechnology to make a positive impact on the world. Starting out in 2003, their team of scientists began a project that changed the world. Sound dramatic? It is. From inside their Berkeley labs, the team developed patented technology that allowed them to create an accessible cure for malaria. If that’s not amazing enough, over 120 million royalty-free treatments have been successfully given thanks to the technology that was developed.

So, how does a company go from finding a cure for one of the deadliest diseases, to producing skincare? Biossance set out to change the beauty industry by leading skincare into a new age. The brand uses squalene, an ultra moisturising ingredient that was originally inhumanely harvested from shark liver, but in the most environmentally-conscious way. By opting for a more sustainably sourced Brazilian sugarcane-derived squalane, they're able to save two million sharks every year. Biossance have also banned over two thousand plus ingredients that are toxic for you and the environment - if that’s not good customers service, we don’t know what is!

As well as being vegan and cruelty free, Biossance are also carbon neutral. For every order shipped, a tree is planted at no additional cost. With the staunch beliefs that we should use products that make a difference for our health and that of the planet, routing for brands like Biossance, who are doing their bit to create a positive impact, is a good place to start.
