After four long months – and what has felt like an eternity – we're now able to get our tresses zhuzhed by professionals. Whether you dared to cut your hair at home and it didn't go to plan, or have been waiting patiently to let your hairdresser go at it, we can now re-enter society safe in the knowledge that post-haircut, our lockdown locks will be looking their best.

And as we've spent the best part of the year reflecting on how to be better humans – whether that's through being more sustainably-minded, having necessary conversations about racism and misogyny or being more philanthropic in nature – we should be bringing this mindset to every facet of our lives, even haircare. We've compiled an edit of our favourite ethical and sustainable hair salons within London, so that you can get your post-lockdown look in the most beneficent way possible.

WhiP London
As well as being one of the most sustainably-minded salons in East London, WhiP London is the spot for so much more than just a hair cut. After hairdressing hours, the salon play host to a smorgasbord of events including, video shoots, art shows, acoustic sessions and live-streams of local DJs. If it's just a haircut you're after, expect one that's done in the most sustainable way possible. They use an eco water system that includes waste-less-water shower heads; they deck their venues – found in Hackney and Homerton – with second-hand furniture, and upcycle pieces where possible; all packaging, hair waste and anything in between is 100% recycled; and they use a mix of Evo, Oway and Olaplex products that are vegan, organic and cruelty-free. Without a doubt, your hair will be WhiPped back into shape in an eco-friendly way.

Hershesons Hair for Heroes
NHS staff will forever be one of the heroes of the pandemic, and Hershesons' latest campaign is a thank you to them. From April 12th to September 30th, any NHS worker will be able to receive a free haircut from one of the brand's hairdressers. Each participating salon will be able to nominate three other salons across the country to take part, in a bid to make these complimentary haircuts as accessible as possible for these key workers. Book into the Hershesons salon in Knightsbridge or Fitzrovia with the knowledge that you may be sitting next to a hero getting their hair done.

Butchers
With a new salon opening in Camden this summer, Butchers – located in Hoxton and Shoreditch – is quickly growing to meet the demands of their eco-friendly clients. The lime-washed walls and rustic wooden floors are just as inviting as their sustainable practices: they use Aveda products that are delivered on e-bikes by local supplier Abel & Coe; they've replaced all paper magazines with their respective apps on iPads, meaning they save around 1500 sheets of paper; and they use eco-friendly showerheads that minimise wastage and filter water. And if you want the full pampering experience, book an appointment in the treatment room of their Hoxton branch, which offers lash extensions and holistic facials from Girl Next Door London and sugaring treatments from EJIRO Studio.
