As part of a logical progression from lifestyle brand to juggernaut, connoisseurs of the olfactory nature, Earl of East have opened a new retail space dedicated to books. BookWorkShop, which is neatly located opposite their flagship space in Coal Drops Yard, serves to satisfy all of your book-worm needs.

In keeping with the East London brand's fashion, this store is as easy on the eye as it is functional. With the help of award winning interior design studio Fred Rigby, the store is styled with sustainable shelving that's been repurposed from existing scaffolding. With a colour palette of blue adorning the walls and a natural one-way system in place, the shop has a calming flow that feng shui experts would kill for, while incidentally being COVID safe. “It is important that people feel content in this space, which is why we have designed a 5 metre long central table with safety screens that feel like they’re part of the design concept,” explains one of the co-founders, Niko Dafkos. “This both adheres to the 1 metre distance rule for workshops but also creates an organic one-way system around the store for customers.”

Hosting a collection that spans from coffee table tomes to independent magazines, it's one to be seen and appreciated in the flesh. And for Paul Firmin, the other half of the perfumatory duo, it's the experience element to retail that's keeping it's fire burning. “We believe in it now more than ever. Nothing beats seeing a book or magazine in real-life, discovering a new scent, or having a conversation with someone in-store.”

To guide us as to what to wade through and what not to (read: failsafe winners if you need to buy last minute gifts) we asked the pair to pick their top three.

What... Wanderlust Europe

Why... "It’s been a crazy year, and if like us you’re dreaming of travelling again then this is the book for you. From the Scottish Highlands to the endless amber beaches of the Baltic Sea, this stimulating manual takes you to some of the most awe-inspiring places on the planet. It has certainly given us lots of inspiration for when the World is ready. This is a must have for all the homebound travellers out there."

What... The Monocle Guide To Cosy Homes

Why... "If this year has taught us anything, it’s the importance of feeling comfortable at home. We’ve spent some time making improvements to our home over the past few months and The Monocle Guide To Cosy Homes has been a great source of inspiration. Both a practical guide and great inspo for anyone wanting to switch things up."

What... The Scented Candle Workshop

Why... "Are we allowed to recommend our own book? Released in Sept 2019, The Scented Candle Workshop has been really popular this year, particularly in the run up to Christmas. As well as the basic steps to preparing and pouring candles at home, the book includes an exploration of the art of building scent, so that the reader can create their own signature fragrances. Perfect for people wanting to learn a new craft from the safety of home."
