"The self-portrait girl is charismatic and confident… She is the modern woman: Empowered, self-assured, and unafraid to own her femininity,” says designer Han Chong of self-portrait – the label fabled for its pinch-me-we’re-dreaming partywear.

Empowerment and charisma are at the core of Han’s creations. With silhouettes that traipse between mini and maxi, and rich fabrics spanning plush velvet and satin, self-portrait is a go-to for occasion dressing, and deciphering the dilemma of what-on-earth to wear for this coming New Year's Eve.

We spoke to the man behind it all for some invaluable dress-to-impress advice…

What’s the best way to make an entrance at New Year?
Rich textures of velvet and sequin embellishments are sure to embolden and uplift; we’ve built the collection with plush jewel tones and have designed gorgeous star-embellished fabrics that are sure to make your presence known!

Are there any pieces in particular that stand out?
We were inspired by the electric 1980s party staples. Think form-fitting dresses with exaggerated shoulders and fuchsia power suits.

Styles like the One Shoulder Velvet Diamante Midi Dress and One Shoulder Lace Trimmed Dress are statement making and perfect for dancing the night away. If you’re after something with sparkle, go for the Black Sequin-Embellished Ruffle Mini Dress or the Star Tulle Embellished Maxi Dress… What better way to stand out from the crowd than with a little glitter?

What are your ingredients for the perfect party?
I’m very much of the more, the merrier belief! I grew up surrounded by an amazing food culture in Malaysia, so I love kicking things off with a family-style feast. Eating and celebrating with food connects people – evoking memories and emotions that get the conversation going.

Curate a good playlist beforehand… That way, all you have to do is turn the music up, pour a few drinks and commence the dancing! I’ve got close friends staying with me over the holidays, so we’ll be throwing a little party at home, while watching the fireworks at midnight from the roof terrace in my building.

What are your resolutions for 2019?
My biggest resolution is to support the designers of tomorrow. I’ve learnt so much since starting self-portrait five years ago, and I’m deeply impassioned about helping creative minds to develop their business capabilities, and foster commercially viable brands that will stand the test of time. I’ve partnered with Central Saint Martins to offer a scholarship that’s open to all students on the MA Fashion course to support emerging talent.
