Going hell for leather with top-to-toe tonals can be a daunting prospect; however, as the all-black-errrrrythin’ look has proved on countless occasions, it’s one that has the potential to be executed to elegant effect (meaning, we actively encourage doing so!).

Thus, for SS19, fashion entered a new neutral territory, with fifty shades of beige (from a creamy, sandy colour to richer flavours of oatmeal) stepping forward as the modern answer to monochrome – and one that’s specifically targeted to the sunny season.

Riccardo Tisci made his Burberry debut nodding to familiar notes of the brand’s heritage nova check, presenting near on 20 looks that covered all bases from work to play and beyond. Meanwhile, Eudon Choi injected his uniform with a utilitarian edge via technical nuances and subtle edgy fixtures, proving the shade’s practical credentials and simultaneously establishing it as the very opposite of beige-means-boring.

Maria Grazia Chiuri plumped for the neutral to feature heavily in her emotional showcase for Christian Dior, where floor-sweeping gowns spanned the spectrum of flavorsome latte hues. Where certain frocks featured an extra flourish of frothy balletic tulle, contrasting jerseywear pieces (a first for Maria Grazia) inhabited the darker, woody aromas of a rich Colombian blend.

Elsewhere, Tibi demonstrated a notable predilection for keeping the palette pared-back, putting on a beige display through tailoring that tapped into another key trend of SS19: XXL, power shouldering.

Basically, if you remember anything this season, let it be that beige-on-beige-on-beige (-on-beige-on-beige) is ever so far from ‘bland’.
