Referencing the traditional dress sported by her great-grandmother and great-aunt and juxtaposing this with her Midlands upbringing, Anglo-Indian Supriya Lele considers herself a “cultural mishmash” – and this duality of cultures offers a constant source of inspiration for her design process.

“I always look at similar reference points,” she explained at her SS19 presentation. “I start with family photos and draping images. Whether it’s fabric draped over trees, or a photo of my great aunt, that’s how I collate my visual references.”

Marking her first solo presentation since graduating from the Fashion East incubator and her second season of production, the collection itself is a mishmash, mixing tailoring and sportswear tropes with draping, layering and transparency. “I wanted to continue exploring some of the signature pieces that I started developing last season,” she says.

And how does it feel to go it alone, touted as one of the most exciting London talents to watch? “I was super nervous about it,” she let’s on. “It’s all happened so quickly, I really need to take it all in!”
