Whether a persimmon tinge, a subtle shade of apricot, a dark burnt orange, or a safety, high-vis hue, the colour orange contains a vast spectrum – and the runways and presentations of SS19 weren’t shy about showcasing the whole gamut!

Orange is to colour what beige is to neutrals – the modern answer to monochrome. The retina-searing shade brings a ‘pop’ of colour to our Spring/Summer 2019 uniforms, simultaneously brightening our moods and refreshing our wardrobes. 

This season Alexa Chung, who launched her namesake label in 2017, made her first foray into the London Fashion Week schedule with ‘Arrivals and Departures’, a show that conjured up a fantasy airport with a myriad of different characters; the departure lounge was peopled with safari suits and Hawaiian print pants, illustrative seaside scenes of Blighty, and a brilliant bohemian-in-spirit orange silk dress that we’re charting as a beachside must-have. Also on home soil, retuning for her third season on-schedule – showcased on New Oxford Street, that made for a “personal reflection on a real woman’s life" – Rejna Pyo showcased the hue, this time in the form of a coral ribbed knit dress with ostrich feather trim at the sleeve and hem.

Over in Milan, Agnona – the Zegna-owned house with British designer Simon Holloway at the reigns – presented a medley of pared-back looks interspersed with spot-from-a-mile-off, strong burnt orange ensembles, which traipsed between fluid and tailored shapes. 

Meanwhile in New York, under the creative direction of Niall Sloan, stalwarts to a statement silhouette, Escada also embraced the palette, bolstering its signature suiting with a contemporary twist. At the same time, in Paris, in typical Dries van Noten fashion, we were served a visual treat of rich, vivid hues. This season, the designer brought back a “gesture of couture, but not in a retro way,” which saw wrapping and tying nod to couturière draping, and a tangerine trench of dreams make for a key piece.

Moral of the story? We're squeezing an orange from SS19 for a healthy dose of Vitamin C!
