Why… Because housed in a trellis-style outer, and fashioned with a dusty-pink satin drawstring pouch, this bag is cute-as-a-button.
A tale of three designers – Elke Ruge, and her daughters Amanda and Elena Hawila – and two places – of country living in Costa Rica and city-dwelling in London – bag brand Montunas melds a mashup of inspirations to serve the global woman.
On face value, the brand looks inherently cosmopolitan with acetate construction, tassels and scarfs, and detachable silk organza drawstring pouches mainstays, but it was, in fact, a cattle ranch in Elke's native Costa Rica that spawned the idea for Montunas. It began with a belt bag – born out of a need for practicality while riding on horseback – and since backpacks, bucket and tote bags have followed. Eschewing trends and 'fast' fashion to transcend generations and continents, Montunas' styles are designed to live on as classic pieces.
This season, the brand found inspiration in orchids (native to Costa Rica) and the hanging planters and pots that decorate their Montunas Orchid House, nestled in the mountains of San Jose. Of the offering, aptly titled the Orchid Collection, the 'Lirio' bucket bag caught our eye for teetering on the more unfamiliar side with its shape.
With satin on show, this style is designed for either heatwaves in the city or hot climes on foreign shores. Not quite big enough to make for hand luggage, pack this pint-size number carefully and bring out on the beach promenade alongside open-toe sandals and linen button-down dresses for a true #OOO look.
