Because there’s no place quite like the Great British high street – from its niche independents, to seasonal Pop Ups and those expansive yet elegant department stores – Because Magazine is on a mission to champion the bricks-and-mortar of London in all its glory. Each week, we’ll beeline to the rails of our favourite retailers to scope out the must-have pieces and in-store exclusives that are more than worth making an effort for. This week, we're at The Duke of York Square discovering Sunspel's new store.

A stalwart of classic British style – born out of Thomas Hill's textile factory in Newdigate, Nottingham – next year Sunspel are to celebrate their 160th anniversary. In keeping with the incoming birthday celebrations, the brand have added to their London bricks-and-mortar portfolio with a new location in Chelsea’s Duke of York Square.

Standing the test of time (the brand have survived the Great Depression and the Second World War), Sunspel's pieces are timeless for their classic cuts: the humble T-shirt, polo and boxer short making for their 'icons', while knitwear, shirts, blouses, sleepwear and loungewear are among the pillars to covert across womenswear.

Keen to learn of just three womenswear pieces, Because Magazine met with Store Manager, Chloe, to learn more...

What... Rib Vest in archive white and Travel Wool Wide Leg Trouser in grey melange.

Because...“It’s made from organic cotton and it's very easy to wear every season – you can use it as a layer in winter but also as a top in summer. The trousers are made from tropical wool, which is very light and breathable so it’s perfect for the summer. They also come in grey and don’t crease so they’re great to travel with.”

What... Boy Fit T-shirt.

Because…"A few years ago we had so many ladies wearing their boyfriend’s Sunspel T-shirts because Sunspel womenswear didn't exist at the time. A spin off the men's style, the 'Boy Fit' T-shirt is a bit more adjusted for a lady: it’s still quite long on the sleeves and the body and just a bit more relaxed on the shoulders with a high neck. Also, it’s made of a midweight, organic cotton."

What...Liberty Print Pajama Set in Pink Buds.

Because…"This set is called the 'pajama set', but we actually have many ladies wearing it as outerwear – especially as the top is really nice with jeans and the bottoms are a bit more summery. It’s a nice set to wear on the beach or as loungewear at home. It’s made of 100% cotton and every season we work with Liberty who have many different prints coming in that style as well so it’s a nice gift. We do some custom prints of our own and some using Liberty fabrics."
