Artistic Director of menswear at Louis Vuitton and Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Off-White, Virgil Abloh, is a man of many talents. One talent, we’re championing this week, is his knack for designing the dreamiest of checked wool mini skirts.

Nodding to his love for sportswear with a traditional tennis pleat, the Italian-crafted skirt invites you to channel your inner Wimbledon champion and score style points on centre court. In a black, burgundy and blue check – a risqué yet chic colour combination – the number is worn best with a tan and three very different ways…

Deliberately mismatching checks looks so wrong that it’s right. Going full throttle at power dressing, team the rigid checked wool skirt with strong shoulders up top, care of Khatie’s brown checked oversized blazer. Throwing it back to the ‘80s, the shoulders arrive padded with the lapels wide and the sleeves elongated. Naturally, with the combination of check-on-check, keep it fuss-free with a plain basic; & Other Stories’ white tank top will do the trick. Meanwhile, hold nothing back in the footwear department – tapping into one of the key footwear trends of the season – knee-high boots! Chloé’s crocodile-effect burgundy beauties need no introduction…

Ditching the blazer, a silk-organza wrap shirt too makes for a partner in crime for the skirt. New Zealand-based Maggie Marilyn’s mint green number gets our vote for a number of reasons: its details (a self-tie belt and notched lapels), but, chiefly, for its sustainable approach that’s earned it a spot in Net-a-Porter’s expanding sustainable edit, ‘NET SUSTAIN’. Crafted from 100% peace silk that’s been ethically produced by Mr Shen of the brand, and complete with a camisole cut from a fabric made of rose petals, the shirt is as cunning as it is a classic piece. As for accessories, BOYY’s multi-coloured PVC tote dials up the fun while bringing a clash to the equation; much like the former look, it’s so wrong it’s right.

Finally, a third way to breathe new life into the skirt is with a palette that leans to the muted side… With a helping of metallic chainmail! Tucking in COS’ light grey boxy shirt dress (and playing with layers so that the hem plays peekaboo), while teaming with Prada’s pointed toe, leather croc-embossed mules takes the skirt in a ‘preppy’ direction for back-to-back meetings. Elsewhere, the power of accessorising puts a whole new spin on the look. Opting for Paco Rabanne’s cult ‘Pixel 1960’ bag, the pared-back ‘fit quickly veers into going ‘out out’ territory… See you at Isabel's for a Moscow Mule!
