Readily drawing from the work of artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Isamu Noguchi and Hans Arp, these columnar heels are an ode to mid-century Modernism. They also nod to the ongoing influence of the sculptural form of Salvatore Ferragamo’s F wedge from the 1940s and, more recently, Simon Porte’s asymmetrical designs for Jacquemus in AW17.
Rejina Pyo’s mules and London-based Neous’ mid-height sandals blend the organic with the geometric; Ferragamo’s Duplo-esque heel is joyously unconventional; STAUD’s subtly curved stiletto is fluid and streamlined and Cult Gaia’s shoe, which uses stacked rounds for height, have great visual impact. Their thin straps and muted shades recall a 90s minimalist aesthetic. And these sandals, although experimental, are not overdone. With their mid-height heels they manage to be both practical and (a touch) avant-garde.
