It's not uncommon to see a swimsuit as the base component of beachwear outfits, but it's rare to see the ensemble in a city setting. But while there's a resounding question mark around whether we'll be travelling abroad this summer, we're predicting to see it worn down at the local park.

Now, here us out... while it may seem completely unnecessary to don a bathing suit, there are some legitimate reasons as to why we would do so. Firstly, the addition of a spandex fabric to our outfits is quick and easy way of elevating them with newness. Take Khaite's knitted bra as an example, when Katie Holmes was spotted wearing one out and about in New York, it was seen as the coolest (but ultimately random) clothing piece of 2019. The dichotomy between wearing swimwear on the streets is in the same vein as wearing knitted lingerie outside of the house – and we're here for it.

Secondly, it may be the closest we can get to emulating our holiday wardrobe. Before Coronavirus (BC), we may have been adorning the looks on the coast of the Mediterranean, now we can wear them for a sunbathing session in the park – with the only similarity being the warm temperatures (or so we can wish).

Whatever the reasoning, we've searched the digital rails to find the best styles that'll lift your looks, and we've explained how best to style them.

The Square Neck Swimsuit
This inherently 90s neckline has made a reappearance in this decade, with models sporting it on the catwalks of Dior, Chanel, Hermes and Jacquemus during the Spring/Summer 2021 shows. Replicate it with your swimwear in the most summery way possible, by opting for a print, like these Mara Hoffman and Cala De La Cruz options, or by wearing a swimsuit in a neon hue. This Hunza G style is made with their signature crinkled jersey, which will add another dimension of texture to your look.

For added style kudos that's in keeping the with 90s theme, wear with an Asceno oversized linen suit, some JW Anderson leather slides and suitably geometric COS x Yuma Labs sunglasses.

The Lingerie-like Swimsuit
Swimwear can be sexy without showing too much skin. Take this Isa Boulder swimsuit; the ruching detail over the tummy, exposed underwire cups (perfect for those in need of bust support) and metallic finish pays tribute to lingerie whilst being most suitable for water. If you fancy a more subtle take, look to Fendi's monogram iteration or a simple Sir style, which exudes femininity, without being too overtly sexual.

To balance out the outfit, pair the lingerie lookalike with a Valentino maxi skirt and some Roger Vivier espadrille mules. Stuff your essentials in a Staud handbag and you'll be set for any alfresco dining adventure.

The Low-back Swimsuit
As a classic style that will never look out of date, the trusty low-back swimsuit should be welcomed addition to your everyday wardrobe – and it gives your back the opportunity to soak in some Vitamin D. This offering from Solid & Striped and Adriana Degreas are timeless, and you'll find it hard to not find bottom halves that doesn't compliment them. But this Missoni Mare swimsuit takes poll position for it's outfit popping capabilities, and we love how the stripes emulate the label's artisanal knitting techniques.

Ideal for a dress down day, wear the low-back with a pair with Marine Serre jeans and some Marni flatforms for extreme comfort.
