We're all expecting a case study soon on how Birkenstock managed to turn itself away from its "crunchy" roots into a high fashion fixture in a matter of just a few years. Proenza Schouler, Rick Owens, TooGood and Dior are just a few of the brands that have re-imagined the cork-soled sandal, first launched in 1774 as an orthopeadic solution to combat flat-footedness.

And now, the next collaborator stepping up to the plate to re-think the iconic Birkenstock 1774 is American brand, Fear of God headed by Jerry Lorenzo. Typically known for its casualwear and laid back Cali-attitude, the result is the Los Feliz sandal, which takes its name from the hillside enclaves of the Los Angeles neighbourhood.

Keeping Birkenstock’s functional heritage in mind, the shoes are expertly crafted in Germany with practicality at their core. A bit of flair comes with an overhanging strap closure rendered in calf suede or wool felt. Familiar, yet wholly new.

“We’re always attempting to create a product that’s rooted in function and necessity, that is preceded by a clear aesthetic point of view,”  Jerry says of the collaboration, and we're pulling our socks up and sliding into these asap.
